The PHQ9-Youth is a modified version of the adult PHQ-9 designed for adolescents aged 12-18 years old. This self-report screening takes less than 5 minutes to complete including additional questions to explore dysthymia, recent suicide ideation and previous suicide attempts. Screening annually for depression is recommended by both the AAP and US Preventative Task Force. The PHQ9-Youth better addresses the growing national trend of adolescent ideation and suicidal risk.
The PHQ-Youth demonstrated satisfactory sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic agreement, and overall diagnostic accuracy, compared with the clinical interview. The PHQ-Youth is the first such tool to be tested for use in adolescents and offers an acceptable and efficient tool for early detection and recognition of mental disorders in this high-risk group.
